Living in a foreign country is an exciting experience with many hopes and a chance for new beginnings, yet, it can also be overwhelming and daunting.

What if you moved abroad because of your spouse’s career?

Your partner has clear goals and challenges in the new position, but your future is vague, and you start feeling lonely, stressed, and bored.

I understand you. I have been in your shoes and done it a few times in the past.

I know how it feels when you can’t explain what you are going through to friends and family. How tough it gets when you are out of your comfort zone, go through emotional ups and downs, and face uncertainty and self-doubts.

It does not have to be that way!

True, not so long ago, the term “trailing spouses” described those who followed their partner to another country for the sake of their career. They stayed at home, relied on their working partner for permission to live in a foreign country, cared for family and children, and provided emotional support to their partner.

However, changes and developments in the global employment market and social structure have led to a positive shift in perspectives over the years. The unflattering label “trailing spouse” is no longer acceptable. The term “accompanying partner” replaced it and contributed to a switch in how partners are valued and treated during relocation.

Nowadays, working partners and employers understand that relocation success and accompanying partner satisfaction are directly connected.

Undoubtedly, you, the accompanying partner, deserve to fulfill professional and personal goals and have contentment and a sense of achievement in the new country. After all, you did not move to another country to support your spouse’s work and to help your family and kids.
